Obit or obituary

A biography of a dead person.

Object

(on a page): A text frame, box, ellipse, rule, or image; (in database): any content, or reference

Oblique

Roman type artificially slanted to look italic.

Octothorpe

A cross-hatch symbol, also called a "number sign" or (in the US) "pound sign."

Ogonek

See accent marks.

Old text

A previous version.

Oldstyle figures

A set of numerals with ascenders and descenders, as opposed to lining figures.

On-line backup server

(configuration) (GN4) Two servers, which are functional both at the same time, and databases are backuped from the main database server to the backup server. If the main database server should fail, the backup server takes over.

Op-ed

Page of comment facing (opposite) the editorial page. Some newspapers use this page for letters to the editor, articles by columnists, etc.

OPI

Open Prepress Interface. A set of PostScript language comment conventions to pass layout information about imported bitmap images to an OPI-compatible system. OPI comments describe the placement, size, rotation and cropping of imported bitmap images so that the OPI server can insert high-quality images before printing the page(s); also an application which creates low-resolution pairs for high-resolution images, so the low-resolution images can be used all the times during page make-up process, while the high-resolution images are used only when printing (thus, moved through network just few times).

Optical centre

A point above the true centre of the page which will not appear 'low' as the geometric centre does.

Ornamental cap

See initial cap.

Orphan

Line of type on its own at the top or bottom of a page.

Outline

(1) A text effect that defines a character by using only a line border. Works best with bold typefaces or typefaces with thick strokes. (2) Also known as printer fonts; the means by which digital type is scalable. Your computer scales the point size of a character without distortion, generating smooth output. Compare to screen (bitmapped) fonts, used to represent characters onscreen using pixels.

Overline

A brief tag above a headline to categorize a story; also the caption above a photograph

Overprint

When two colors print over one another. Used mostly to escape registration problems, black type and lines are commonly overprinted on top of other lighter colors.

Overscore

A rule or line set above type.

Overset

Part of text that is longer of its assigned space.
