Main tab

(GN4) the "application" tab in the main window of Ted4 and Fred4, typically below main menu bar. GN4 main tabs correspond to functionalities, e.g. article editor, page designer, edition manager, production tracker, planner, BACK4  monitor, users and groups etc.

Majuscule

Archaic term for uppercase.

Make-over

Rearrangement of stories on a page to provide for new copy or to change the position of stories.

Make-up

The assembling of all elements, to form the printed image.

Managing editor

An editor assigned to the supervision and coordination of certain editorial activities of a newspaper, magazine, book publishing company, or the like. Abbr.: M.E., m.e.

Margin

White space, typically around the edges of each sheet.

Mark up

(1) to put composition or editing instructions on copy or layouts

Markup

Refers to the sequence of characters or other symbols that you insert at certain places in a text to indicate how the file should look when it is printed. The markup indicators are also called "tags."

Mask

To allow only a certain area of an image to be changed or manipulated, a mask is created to block the areas where no change is desired. Masks are used for a variety of assembly and production processes in publishing.

Mask (cropping)

A white area covering the parts of a image you don't want to print.

Master page

The background of your publication, where you can place objects you'd like to appear on every page-such as headers and footers, page numbers, or a border design.. The most bottom layer of a page. Usually contains grid and folio area, with date, section name, and page number.

Masthead

This term is used to mean three things and can get confusing. It is used to mean the name on page one, for the box on the editorial page with the names of top editors, and for the box of names, phone numbers and addresses that appears in the first few pages of the newspaper

Mean line

An imaginary line drawn at the x-height, or top point of all lowercase letters without ascenders.

Measure

The length of a line of type.; also Width of a column.

Meatball

Midline

An imaginary line drawn along the middle horizontal strokes of a typeface's A, E, and H. Midlines are said to be high, low, or standard.

Mirrored margins

In a spread, identical settings for inside (gutter) and outside margins.

Module

The element of the horizontal grid.

Monospaced type

Characters (such as typewritten letters) that take up the same amount of horizontal space. Useful for setting numbers in columns. Compare proportional type.

Mug

A mug shot or a small photo of someone. If someone says, "get me a mug," don't come back with coffee.
