Default format in GN4; library, the style library with standard additional GNML tags.

Jaggies

A "stairstep" effect sometimes noticeable on printouts with diagonal lines or rounded shapes; results from printing constrasting screen pixels without compensating for their squarish shape. Increasing the number of image colors or applying antialiasing offsets this undesirable effect.

JPG, JPEG

Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPEG or .JPG is a bitmap image file format with lossy compression, especially well-suited to photographic images.

Jump

The continuation instructions of a story that is jumped to another page (Continued on page 5; Continued from page 1)

Jump head

The headline printed over the continued portion of a story in a newspaper, magazine, etc., usually condensed from the main headline.

Jump line

A line of type identifying the page on or from which a newspaper story is continued.

Jump story

A story flowing on more pages.

Justification area

A rectangular single text frame, assigned for tasting purposes to a non linked text.

Justified

Text that lines up at both the left and right margins, also called "fully justified." See force-justified and alignment.

Justify

Computers add spaces between words or individual letters of type so that lines of a column are flush left and flush right /forced= The alignment of text along a margin or both margins. This is achieved by adjusting the spacing between the words and characters as necessary so that each line of text finishes at the same point.
