About baseline grids

GN4 supports two kinds of non-printing baseline grids:

Typographical baseline grid, to align vertically text lines within text frames.

It is managed by a text format or paragraph styles and it is not visible on page and in text. Note: it affects only texts flowing in a linked or local geometry. It does nothing on texts without any geometry.

When a text is aligned to the typographical baseline grid, it still may be misaligned regarding the page baseline grid.

Page baseline grid to align vertically top edges of text frames.

It is managed by page modules or vertical nudge. The grid based on page modules can be made visible.

When frames are aligned to the page baseline grid, and the text within frames is aligned to the typographical baseline grid, if two do not coincide, text won't be aligned to the page baseline grid.

These two kinds of grid are independent one from each other, and there's no an automatic sync procedure. It's your responsibility to set these grids up in the way they coincide.

By default, in a new system (new format, new page), both kinds of grids are disabled.

Some differences

Page baseline grid helps to position text frames and other objects on page, and it is defined on master or layer level, while the typographical baseline grid determines the text flow within text frames, and it is set on the text formatting level: in a format or style.

Page baseline grid is the same for all text on that page, while the typographical baseline grid can be different in every text.

Page baseline grid may be displayed on page, while the typographical baseline grid is always invisible.

Page baseline grid in Fred4 does not constrain lines in texts on the page to align to grid - only the right combination of the page baseline grid and the typographical baseline grid determines the vertical alignment of texts lines on page.
