The Main tab of the preferences dialog box on the Pages main tab in Fred4 contains general preferences.

All the preferences are personal (per-user) setting. Click the preference name for the further information (where available).

Preference	Description
Measurement	Select the horizontal and vertical measurement units for page editing.
Auto save	Tick, to enable the auto-save. In Changes between saves, specify the interval of 20.
Undo	Recommended: 600 or more.
Automatic refresh	Leave the Every (mins) value on 0.
Automatically update images on refresh and on load	Tick, to have all images always up-to-date on page.
Also on read-only layers	Tick, if you use Fred4 in Ted4-Extra mode.
Tolerance*	Specify an acceptable value, e.g. 1-5%. Recommended: 1-5.
Isotropic*	Tick, to keep images undistorted during refresh, when image was re-uploaded.
Referred to image size*	Tick, to respect the cropping during refresh, when image was re-uploaded. Recommeded: ticked.
Automatically check-out layers when opening pages	Tick, to check-out on page opening all the layers which can be checked out. Recommended: ticked.
Warn on page jumps	Tick, to be prompted to confirm when linking an article across different pages. Recommended: ticked.
Keep images aspect ratio	Tick only if Fit images on scale is unticked.
Fit images on resize	Tick, to enable smart resizing. See Enable smart image resize. Recommended: ticked.
Select items on drag over	Tick, to auto-select an item you are hovering above. As this removes any selection on page, recommended: unticked.
Enable alerts	Tick, to activate a smart auto-refresh. Recommended: ticked.
