Each time a page jump is created (by linking an article element across more pages), Fred4 creates the jump information (booking) record in the database. The purpose of the jump booking record is to give you the possibility to add more frames, or remove some frames (but not all) to a jump article, without forcing you to check-out all linked pages.
An example: the user John is editing the page 1, but he has not open the page 2 even for viewing. The user Jack is editing the page 2, and he has not open the page 1. The article "mylead" jumps from the page 1 to the page 2. On the page 1, there are three frames linked to the "mylead" article, and on the page 2, there are two frames linked. User John can add more frames to the article on the page 1, or he can remove all but one frame; the same for the user Jack on the page 2. This is possible because Fred4 "knows" the ordinal number of jump sequence (the first number in the link label, e.g. "1" in "1-3" or "2" in "2-1". The jump ordinal number is stored in the jump booking.
This works seamlessly until you arrive to unlink or delete the last remaining frame (that happens, for example, when you want to cut all linked frames of a jump article from a page). In that case, Fred4 requires that you either:
a/ | Open all jump layers in exclusive mode (for editing). If you do so, Fred4 will let you unlink/remove the frames and when you save the page it will update jump ordinal numbers in the database. Of course, if other users are editing jump layers, you can't open them in exclusive mode, unless asking the users to end editing and to close them down temporarily. If you can't afford to do that, then look at the solution b/. |
b/ | Keep the booking record. If you keep the booking record, you can unlink/delete the last (or all) linked frame of a jump article, even if you don't have a write access to all the jump layers. This gives you a flexibility in rearranging the jumps. However, the booked layer remains, and if you will need any time later to delete the entire jump article from jump pages, you will have to open in editing mode also the page(s) with the booked layers. |
To mark the status properly, two icons are used in the links dialog box:
• a standard icon (non blank) depicts the link status of a text which is linked to frames (and to a layer), thus it has geometry and jump ordinal number stored in the database.
•a blank icon (blank) depicts the link status of a text which is booked to a layer, and is not linked to any frame, thus it has no associated geometry, but it has the jump ordinal number stored in the database.
