Character defaults are set when editing a GN4 format. These defaults are applied on the unformatted parts of text to which is assigned that format.
The default settings specified here may be superseded in the text by any style that contains appropriate GNML tags, by typing tags directly in the text, or by changing attributes through the Text dialog.
The default value is not set. Select the appropriate font, otherwise it will disable editing of text. To supersede defaults, use a style that contains >f..< GNML tag, or type the tag directly in the text, or change it in the Text dialog box. |
The default value is 10pt. The hard-coded default value of 10pt is probably unsuitable. It is recommended to set the default type size to whatever is most common type size in your publications. Tag to supersede defaults: >h..<. |
The default value is empty, thus no hyphenation is available, and hyphenation is disabled. Select the rule for your language. The rules are two letter codes, e.g. EN, IT, SP and similar. Tag to supersede defaults: >hyp..<. |
The horizontal scale of default text (or character's base, as it is called in GN4) is equal to the character type size, thus the default characters are neither compressed nor expanded. Note: when the field contains no value it means "the same as point size". The hard-coded default value is suitable, because it sets up the 100% of the character width. Change it only if you really need a compressed or expanded default font. Warning: for better and professional quality typographical results it is recommended to acquire the compressed fonts instead to compress them by horizontal scaling. Tag to supersede defaults: >w..< . |
The default status is "not tracked", thus the character spacing is as specified in the font. Note: when the field contains no value, it means "0". The hard-coded default value is suitable, as it sets up the normal tracking of the characters. Change it only if you really need a tracked default font. Warning: for better and professional quality typographical results it is recommended to acquire the tracked fonts instead to compress them by tracking here. Tag to supersede defaults: >kern..< |
The default color of text is black with default tint of 100%. The hard-coded default value is suitable, because it sets up the standard values. Change it only if you really need a different color & tint for the default type. Tags to supersede defaults:>co..< and >gray...< Note: 4 basic colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) are always available. if you need more colors, thay have to be defined first in FRED. |
The default case style of text is normal, that means that the character case follow what you type. It is, however, possible to setup all the characters as uppercase (for example, for headlines that have to be all uppercases). The hard-coded default value is suitable, because it sets up the standard values. Change it only if you really need a different case for the default type. Tag to supersede defaults:>small..<. An addition character case default setting, related to >small..< tag, is under Global. |
These special settings are, indeed, almost never used in defaults. The default baseline position and visible text are just fine, and so called electronic italics (slant) is almost never required. These are optional settings. The hard-coded default values are suitable, because they set up the standard values. Change them only if you really need a "specials" in the default type. Tags to supersede defaults: >d..<, >u..<, >jmp..<, >slant..< and >rem...<. |
