Summary of the APM preparation steps

The levels of knowledge

The levels (L1 through L5) mark the required knowledge of the staff to perform the preparation steps. The L1 is the most basic level, and the L5 is the level of an expert page sub that uses Fred for page make-up of variety of story-driven layouts on daily basis for several consecutive years, including preparation of the library objects and formats.

The preparation steps

1.L1: Decide about the editions and libraries naming. See Deciding about naming conventions.

2.L1: Get the page dimensions and page grid data from Indesign documents. See Getting page measures.

3.L1: Create set of folders for the new product. See Creating article folders.

4.L2: Create new page sections named with the same prefix as the editions. See Preparing a title and sections.

5.L1: Install the original fonts. See Installing fonts.

6.L1: Create a test edition with the appropriate masters. See Creating test edition template and Building masters.

7.L1: Assign page sections and categories to the pages, destinated to be automatically made-up.

8.L1: Upload original ads to GN4 and link them to the GN4 ads layers, adding the cut rules where necessary.

9.L1: Upload original images to GN4 and linking them to the articles.

10.L1: Create new categories and new content positions if necessary. See Preparing categories and Preparing content positions

11.L3: Transform original page layouts into Fred’s ones, frame by frame, image by image. If you have a copy of the original software, working on it and Fred side-by-side, reading the position and dimensions values in the original software and creating the same in Fred.

12.L2: Create GN4 articles copying and pasting from the original ones. See Create test articles

13.L4: Transform the original text formatting in GN4’s one, style by style, reading the values from the original software, and creating GN4 formats and styles.

14.L4: Prepare GN4 pages to be converted into templates. See Preparing a page to be converted into a template object.

15.L2: Measure ads and create GN4 libraries, based on the ads dimensions.

16.L3: Add required stationery to the object library shapes, that includes creating of logical groups, assigning content positions to shapes and generating the appropriate objects descriptions

17.L1: Assign content position to articles, corresponding to the content position assigned to the library objects.

18.L2: Test automated page make-up.

19.L4: If necessary, adjust templates until the prototype works perfectly.
