The General sub-tab on the Extra tab of the preferences dialog box on the Pages main tab in Fred4 contains additional general preferences. All the preferences are personal (per-user) setting.

Preference	Description
Auto-name new article in Fred4	Tick, to auto-name new articles in Fred4.
When Linking, Keep Local Formats	Recommended: ticked.
When Resizing, Fit Text	Recommended: ticked.
When Linking, Apply Auto-Actions	Tick, to automatically apply auto-actions when linking.
When Linking, Save Page	Tick, to save page automatically on each link/unlink operation.
Inner margin (frame with margins) Parameters (frame with margins)	Enter the default inner margin and color parameters, to be applied when you toggle frame margins (Tools > Frames > Toggle Frames Inner Margins and Background),
Increment for ALT+ARROWS (since 2.3)	Enter the value to use when moving objects by ALT+ARROWS.
Ignore selection when dropping on empty space on page	Recommended: ticked.
Auto close drop dialog when done	Tick, if you want that Fred4 automatically closed crop dialog when done. Recommended: ticked.
Check if caption frame is selected when dropping a picture	Tick, if you want that Fred4 checks if the caption frame is selected when dropping a picture.
Always fit images on replacement*	Tick, to avoid prompt when replacing one image with another and to force fit. Available in 2.0 and older.
When replacing an image on page	Select the default behavior when replacing an image on page. Recommended: Fit. Available since 2.1
Simple New article dialog as default	Tick, to use by default a simple new article dialog.
Auto-split/join content when dealing with double masters	Tick, to move the content from a double master to the single master or vice versa.
Do not reset hot-spot on rotation	Tick to keep the stored hot-spot when selecting the rotate tool.
Zoom to Shape when Selecting with Middle Button Click	Tick to have the selected article zoomed. Untick to keep the current zoom.

Note

•Auto-naming algorithm is hard-coded in the NewFredArticle.

•Inner margins and parameters are used by scripts ToggleFramesInnerMargins, ToggleFramesDefaultMargBckgr, IncrFramesInnerMargins and DecrFramesInnerMargins.

•The choice of simple or complete new article dialog is performed by the script CreateNewFredArticle.
