A layer can be:

•Current

All objects you add, are added to that layer. See Accessing layers.

•Visible or hidden

All objects on the layer are displayed or hidden. See Showing or hiding layers.

•Frozen

You can select only objects on that layer. See Accessing layers.

•Locked

You cannot edit objects on locked layers. See Locking layers.

•Checked-out by you

You can change the layout on the layer, and other users can only view it. You can yield the layer. See Checking-out a layer.

•In use by someone else

You cannot change the layout on the layer, in use by someone else.

•Free

The layer is not in use by anyone. You can attempt to check-out the layer. See Accessing layers.

•Shared with other pages

This means the content of that layer appears on more than one page. See Sharing layers.
