In Fred4, you can copy or move the entire pages or the parts of the pages in another edition. More precisely, you can:

1.Copy or move a single layer to another page, located in the same edition or in a different edition provided it belongs to the same title. See Copy a layer from one page to another and Move a layer from one page to another.

2.Copy master pages within the same edition (duplicating them) or to any other edition in the same title, or in another title, providing both titles share the same typography.

3.Copy one or more pages within the same edition (duplication) or to any other edition in the same title, or in another title, providing both titles share the same typography.

4.Duplicate an entire edition to another one in the same title, or in another title, providing both titles share the same typography.

Mainly, the operations are to be performed on the Editions main tab. You can do very complex sequences of copy, linking and editing on one edition - resolving page numbering problems for example - and then save all the changes in one operation.

Copying or moving is achieved with a simple copy&paste or drag&drop of a layer.

About references to images and articles

References to images are automatically copied when a layer containing a image is copied.

References to articles are handled differently. When an edition with copied layers containing linked articles is saved, the user is prompted with the list of the linked articles to be copied. For each article, it is possible to copy it under a new name, or to remove it - leaving its text frames unlinked in the copied layers. For each article copied in this way, the system saves the id of the source article along with the new article.  From this information it is possible to track all of the articles that are 'related', that is, they were created from a common source in order to replicate a change throughout all versions.  The system can automatically generate new names, or the user can generate names by applying a prefix or suffix to the existing names, or by individually choosing new names. It is also possible to change the folder of the copied articles , so that they enter at a different stage of the copy-flow.
