Apply a format on text

You can apply a typographical format on a text element of an article, or to a text frame on page.

By applying a format, you change the typographical default of the unformatted parts of text, and potentially, also the typographical aspect of every style in the text.

See also Apply a format on text and select decks.

To apply a format on a frame

1.Click to select a frame.

2.Do one of the following

On the Format toolbar, select a format from the list.

On the Type menu, click Select Format, and then select a format from the list.

Press F2 and then select a format from the list.

The selected format is applied on the frame and copied to the Tool settings.

Notes

In the versions 2.2.2670 or newer, if the Size Frame on Format Change on the Split sub-tab of the Extra tab in the Page Editing Preferences ticked, the frame height is adjusted to the existing content and to the new format. It works for all non-body frames.

In the version 2.2 or newer, if you hold CTRL while clicking OK in the dialog box, the selected format becomes the default format for that frame type.

To apply a format on an article element while editing text

1.Place the insertion point anywhere in the text.

1.On the Type menu, click Select Format, and then select a format from the list.

The format is applied on the frame, applied on all text in the article element, but it is not copied to the Tool settings. This may cause the desyncing of the format when unlinking articles from frames.

Note

The list of formats shown when in the Select format dialog box may contain all the formats in the current title, or only the formats related to the current article element. This depends whether the format filtering is on, and how it is configured.

For more information about format filtering, see About formats filtering.
