You need to set the hyphenation defaults of a format during creation of a format (recommended) or any time later.
Note: if you are already editing a format, then start with the step #3.
To set hyphenation defaults of a format
1.Edit a format as explained in Edit formats in EdAdmin4.
2.Select and then edit a format and then click Global.
3.In Breakable chars, specify the list of characters after which the standard hyphen will not be inserted, i.e. characters to be considered as hyphens. The default value is empty.
•If you enter a hyphen sign, then the word Stoke-On-Trent will hyphenate on the position of every hyphen, and also as Sto-ke if required.
•If you enter no hyphen sign, then the word Stoke-On-Trent will NOT break on internal hyphens anymore, but will hyphenate as Sto-ke when required.
•If you enter no hyphen sign, but you add the -Stoke-On-Trent in the hyphenation exception dictionary, then the word Stoke-On-Trent will NOT break at all.
Important: Do not put a space in the list of characters, as lines may not justify to the right edge of the frame and text may appear to be ragged right. Removing the space from breakable characters fixes the problem.
4.In Minimum characters: Before hyphen, specify how many characters must remain before a hyphen. A recommended value is 3 for English and 2 or 3 for other languages.
5.In Minimum characters: After hyphen, specify how many characters must remain after a hyphen. A recommended value is 3 for English and 2 or 3 for other languages.
6.In Minimum characters: breakable word, to specify the number of characters in the shortest word that may be hyphenated. A recommended value is 6 for English and 4 for other languages .
7.In Consecutive hyphens, specify the upper limit for the number of consecutive hyphenated lines or leave it on 32767 to allow (almost) unlimited number of consecutive hyphenated lines (default and recommended). Alternative is to put it on 2 or 3.
