Only part of GN4 configuration can be edited through a dedicated user interface that modifies the data directly in a GN4 database. Such interface is available in browser, EdAdmin4, Admin4 and partially also in GN4 applications.

The rest of configuring is performed by editing configuration XML files by means of any XML enabled editor or Visual Studio Express and then importing the modified file(s) in the database.

Note: in some way, also the VB.Net scripts are "configuration files", but they're not in XML format. Add-ins are described in the Managing GN4 add-ins chapter.
