Directory styles provide an appropriate results formatting, more precisely:

Display form, e.g. a list, or a grid.

List of displayed columns or content of a grid cell.

Available sort orders.

Icons that appear in the results listing,

Filter for results (only in GN4 browser).

Typical directory styles are:

List (short): provides for a table-like results display with only basic columns

Details: provides for a table-like results display with more details

Grid: provides for a grid-like results display in various dimensions (thumbs, medium size, large)

Directory styles are common to all users.

You can switch from one to another directory style by selecting them in the commands zone, or dragging a slider (where provided).

Every search result has own series of directory styles.

You can add more directory styles, or change existing.
