The GN4 help is "single source", i.e. the same content is used to create three help formats: HTMLHelp files (CHM format), Web help (HTML format) and printable documentation (PDF format - available upon request).
Having said that, there are following differences between help formats:
Internet connection GN4.CHM file has to exist to your local drive. It is recommended not to access the file from a network drive, as Windows security setting may prevent you to display it. You don't need any Internet or network connection to read a CHM file. Access time The access time to table of contents, index and full-text search is very short - the access is instantaneous. Up-to-date status As file is stored on your computer, your copy may be out-of-date, i.e. your documentation may contain outdated information. See Getting updated documentation, or use the documentation on the Web site that is always 100% up-to-date. Printing help CHM format is typically not suitable to be printed, except for one topic at a time. Use PDF format if you want to print all text, or selected chapters. |
Internet connection Access GN4 Web help on the Tera web site through an Internet connection (sign-in is required), or through a network connection if installed on your server (no sign-in required). Access time when the Web help is installed locally The access time is very short, but however longer then when accessing the CHM format. Access time to the Web help on the Tera web site The access time depends on the speed of your Internet connection. It takes about two seconds to load the full table of content, and additional few seconds to switch between table of contents, keyword index and full-text search.. Up-to date status Web help on the Tera web site is always 100% up-to-date. Web help on your local server is surely out-of date, unless your automated process refreshes it every day. Printing help HTML format is typically not very suitable to be printed, except for one topic at a time. Use PDF format if you want to print all text, or selected chapters. |
We make PDF files available upon request. PDF files have to be copied to your local drive, or you can access them from a network drive. You don't need any Internet or network connection to read a PDF file. As files are stored on your computer, your copy may be out-of-date, i.e. your documentation may contain outdated information. See Getting updated documentation, or use the documentation on the Web site that is always 100% up-to-date. PDF format is a subset of the CHM or HTML format, as some information are not available in PDF format. Typically, the list of programming methods and properties is not available for printing, as it would contain thousands of pages. We can let you have also such PDF files on request. PDF format is the only format 100% suitable for printing. |
