Summary of dragging articles/wires from Navigator to page

You can drag one or more articles or wire news from a Navigator to a page, opened on the Pages main tab in Fred4. The outcome depends on the selection (target) on the page, and on the number of items you dragged from the navigator.

Dragging one article

Destination	THIS IS THE RESULT
A page with no selection, and article is dropped on the empty space on page	Article becomes the current article.
A page with no selection, and article is dropped on an unselected ungrouped frame	Fred4 selects the frame under the pointer, and article gets linked to that frame*.
A page with no selection, and article is dropped on an unselected grouped frame	Fred4 selects the group under the pointer, and article gets linked to all members of the group*.
A page with selected unlinked frames	If the article is not linked elsewhere, it gets linked to the selected frames
An unlinked frame with local text	The Link text to frames dialog is displayed, allowing you to select wether you want to discard the local text, to add it as a jump line, or to append it on top of the dragged story
A paginated article (with CTRL pressed)	You can choose an action to perform: to replace article, to merge two articles or to bump the current article out of its shapes and link the new article.
A paginated article (without CTRL pressed)	If the global default action is set (see Predefine replace or merge action), it is executed with no prompt. Otherwise, a menu is displayed to choose the action

* If the article or its elements are already linked to another page/edition, an error message is displayed and linking is aborted.

Dragging one or more texts (wire or archive)

WHEN YOU DRAG	TO	THIS IS THE RESULT
One text	One or more frames linked to the same text	The Merge dialog box is displayed, allowing you to choose how to append the dragged text to the linked story.
More texts or wire texts	One or more empty unlinked frames	The Merge dialog box is displayed, allowing you to choose how to append the dragged text to the linked story. All text goes in the same first frame.
