Users of Fred4 can toggle the lock to the page baseline grid.
To do it, on the Layout menu, select Enforce Lock to Grid.
This setting changes the way Fred4 calculates the margins and positions in many operations. It makes sense only if your page baseline grid is well-formed (equal to the most frequent leading).
Notes
•Enforcing the lock to the page baseline grid has following consequences:
oWhen boxing objects, Fred4 uses the value of the vertical grid nudge of the current page, and makes sure that after the boxing, top edges of all frames are aligned to the page baseline grid. The side effect of this is, of course, that frames spacing is set to the page baseline grid, independently of the value you've specified for box margins.
oWhen splitting a frame in headline and legs (SHIFT+numeric key), the height of the headline box is rounded to the closest multiple of the vertical grid nudge, and the space between headline and legs is set to the same value as the vertical grid nudge.
oThis setting does not affect moving of frames by mouse, by entering position in the palette, or by arrow keys.
oEven if the gap for the Head and Body tool is set to 0, some gap may appear between headline and body frames, or between headline, subhead and body frames, as the lock to grid changes the y-position where body columns start to ensure they start exactly on the baseline grid.
•When you use the above menu command, the result is the same as you would change the personal preference (Edit > Preferences > Extra > Split > Lock to grid).
