As you are making page layout, attempting to make it as similar as possible to the original page, you may want to create additional formats, e.g. for headlines, body, photo captions etc.
First, format the text on page by means of palettes or tags, following closely the original formatting.
Do it separately for headlines, captions, and body text.
If headlines have multi-parts, e.g. kicker, subhead etc, create a separate frame for each part and then create separate formats.
For body, create a format and then add the paragraph styles to it.
After you created the first set of formats for each element type, then use the copy function to create format variants. If the formats need different styles, then create new style libraries and assign them to the formats.
