GN4 uses the names of page layers to distinguish them. Names may be variable, fixed or combined. Variable and combined names can be used only in the Edition Manager. When you create a new layer in Fred4, you can enter only a fixed layer name.

Variable name is typically used for editorial layers in the Edition Manager:

&nPage number. Produce 1, 21, 121. It may be suitable for newspapers without zones and sections.
&s&nSection name and page number without a delimiting space. Produce A1, B21, C121. It may be suitable for newspapers with sections, but without zones. If your section names are longer, you may want to add a delimiting space, e.g. &s &n, so it produces Money 1, Features 21.
&s&n &zSection name, page number, and zone name. Produce A1 South, B21 North. It may be suitable for newspapers with sections, and zones.

Fixed name*

AdsName without page number or variables. Results in a fixed string Ads on all pages with advertisement layers.

Note: fixed names are not needed if you assign Advertisement type to ads layers.

Combined name: you can use them for editorial layers when you have more than one editorial layer

Local &nName with string 'Local' and the page number, e.g. Local 12.

* Fixed names are the only names available in Fred4.
