In the status bar of Ted4, locate the 4th field from right. The first number is the number of characters. The second number is number of words. Commented text is not counted.

If your status bar does not show the expected counters, on the Edit menu, click Preferences, and then on the Main tab, under Interractive justification/counters, select Enabled and in the Status bar, select Text height, characters and words.
