Hard return - paragraph break On pressing 8, the ¶ character appears on the cursor's position. It marks that position as the end of the current paragraph. The cursor automatically moves to the beginning of next line (new paragraph). This is well-known as a hard-return. The typographical characteristics of the new paragraph depend on the formatting applied to the split text (if any). If the current paragraph was formatted by a chained style that was not the last one in the chain, the new paragraph will be formatted with the next chained member. Soft return - line break On pressing SHIFT+8, the ¬ character appears, marking this position as the forced end-of-line. the cursor will automatically move to the beginning of next line. The "new line" is known as a soft-return. The formatting remains the same as in the original paragraph. For the details about the alignment of lines on soft return, please see Fully justified lines on soft return. See also About soft returns in content and export to Web. Column break On pressing CTRL+8 (column break), the thin red line appears above the paragraph with the column break. If a text is linked to a page, it automatically flows in all the linked frames, starting from the first one. You can force a part of text to jump into next column (frame) Note about column break: The column break gets created by means of the >newarea< GNML tag. It's important to know that the tag is ignored when applied on the very first line of the text. See also Join paragraphs |
If you force a new line in a justified line, the previous line of the same paragraph stretches to fit the column width, increasing the spacing either between words or between words and letters. To avoid the letter spacing effect in current paragraph, on the Type menu, point to Paragraph, point to Paragraph palette, and then select Use with end line. Such effect, however, may be avoided by default by configuring format defaults as explained above. In that case, the forced line will behave as end of paragraph. |
