Mark wire stories and images as 'read'

Manually marking items as read or unread

Do one of the following:

•On the Edit menu, click Mark as read, or Mark as Unread.

•Right-click items selected in a listing, and then select Mark as read, or Mark as Unread.

Automatically marking items

Display selected item in a draft view (of navigator) or in a preview (of listing), and if they stay displayed longer of predefined interval, specified in your personal preferences on the Shell main tab, or in the AutoRead attribute - in seconds in the ReadingTime section of the GlobalConfig, it will be marked as read. AutoRead attribute may not be present in some older versions of GlobalConfig. In that case, add it.

You can also configure it through the GlobalConfig.aspx page of the web interface (accessible from the home page, by clicking the "Global Configuration" link).

On the Shell main tab, click the Edit menu, and then click Preferences.

In the Read time field, enter the number of seconds after which the item is to be considered read, and then click OK.

Note: this will work only if the draft-view or preview pane contain the ReadIcon statement as:

The above example is for the stories; on the Images pane, there must be the one with {Binding Path=[image.id]}.

1.Locate and edit GlobalConfig as explained in Edit GlobalConfig.

2.Locate the AutoRead attribute (if any) and change it's value (in seconds).

You can use the ReadIcon control to mark and unmark items as read by the current user.

In GN4 client applications

Typically, ReadIcon is added to the preview; if the IsAutoRead is True the item will be marked as read after a period of 5 seconds (as defined by the SystemUserOptions.App_ReadDuration value).

The read datetime is stored against the object as an extra, and could be loaded using Path=object:Read.

However, this does not allow for dynamic updating of listings etc, so instead Path=ReadDate should be used.

In Web interface

The ReadIcon Tera specific Xaml element has been implemented in Web Interface.

Here is an example of use:

Unlike client applications, it can be used ONLY in directory styles, and not in the preview pane.

In order to automatically mark as read an object displayed in a preview pane, you have to edit the property of the preview pane and check the option "Automatically mark as read the objects displayed in this preview web part".

You can change the way text is displayed according to whether it has been read or not; this is achieved through a number of converters that use Path=ReadDate bindings to return font styles, colour, weight, family and size the ReadFontStyleConverter, ReadBrushConverter, ReadFontWeightConverter, ReadFontFamilyConverter and ReadFontSizeConverter respectively.

Converters are available in client applications and Web.

The ConverterParameter contains the unread an read values returned, separated by a colon, e.g. ConverterParameter=Bold:Normal}

The following example will show unread text as bold and read text as normal:

The following example shows changes to FontFamily and FontSize: unread text is shown in 14pt Comic SansMS while read text is shown in 12pt Verdana:

The following shows how to change the Foreground' color of a TextBlock based on the ReadDate: unread text is shown as black, and read text as blue:
