GN4 allows you to choose among a variety of search engines.

Since the version 2.3, the Solr search engine is available and recommended, while alternatives are Microsoft SQL search engine, MySQL search engine and the Oracle native search engine (when using the Oracle database). In versions prior to 2.3, the Exalead search engine was available too.

The implementation of all the search engines available for GN4 shares the same user interface on the GN4 side, but some functionalities may be present or absent, depending on the search engine.
