The pages zone of a content tab on the Pages main tab in Fred4 contains a view of opened pages, the pages private pasteboard and the common pasteboard.
View of opened pages
The view contains all pages you've opened in the current content tab. You can zoom the view as you want. See the Zoom and fit page chapter for zoom procedures.
Together with pages, you zoom the private and common pasteboard.
The pages are ordered in "rows" and "columns" in the view, according to the current preset. See Selecting multi-page view preset and Configuring multi-page view presets.
The private pasteboard of the currently selected page is slightly raised. On the following screenshot, the bottom right page is currently selected.
Common pasteboard
All pages and their private pasteboards sit on the pasteboard. The pasteboard is where you keep objects off-page. Objects off-page are not included in print out, even if they're still printable, but they are archived - unless you provided a method to skip them (for example, by moving them into a folder that is "not-archivable".
See more below about "private pasteboards".
Private pasteboard
Every page sits on its own "private pasteboard". The purpose of the private pasteboard is to store the objects off-page, making them visible only for the users, editing that page. The size of the private pasteboard is limited only by the size of the content window and the screen resolution, but its displayed part is typically much smaller. The visible part of the private pasteboard is delimited by borders that are clearly shown around the page.
You can easily change the size of the private pasteboards (the same for all pages). See the "Pasteboard size" in Configuring multi-page view presets.
You can easily change the color of the private pasteboard (Edit > Preferences > Colors > Custom pasteboard color).
Important: when you decrease the visible size of the private pasteboard, you cannot access the objects that are stored on the hidden part anymore. The objects are not deleted, though - increase the pasteboard size again to bring them into view.
It would be possible to create a script that will scale the private pasteboard on opening pages, dynamically adjusting it should you open more pages.
