Page book represents the fastest and the simplest way for creating full-page layout in Fred4. It is so simple that a page book procedure can be used also by users who never worked on page layout and don't want even to learn about.
The principle of page book is copying pre-formatted / pre-linked pages, stored in edition templates. You are not supposed to attempt to use editions as page books - page books must be of the template kind.
Important: you need to configure page books on your GN4 system before using them. See Configuring page book variables.
You can create many page books, one or more per section, e.g. for News, for Sports, for Economy and similar, and in every page book there may be any number of pages.
Pages in a page book are full of articles and image placeholders on an editorial layer. For advertisement, typically, an empty space is left. This may be the most suitable approach when advertisement is to be put through an automated ads import process.
Page book articles are stored a predefined folder and formatted appropriately. Articles are typically empty, but they contain necessary tags. Page book articles are named according to the naming conventions, and automatically renamed during the copying process. Typically, the name of a page book article is not the same as it will be the name of the final article..
Page book articles can be linked to the dummy images. During page copy, dummy images get renamed in the same way as articles, and moved in the same folder. Actually it is not possible to select a image-specific folder..
Pages in a page book can also contain predefined text content and images. The text is copied into final article, and the images are linked to the final page, but remain in the original directory. Such images, e.g. logos and similar are not supposed to be purged.
The users display in the navigator the designated page book, select the page they want and then they drag it over empty page in the current edition. The template articles are automatically copied and renamed to reflect the date of the target edition and then moved in the directory, suitable for the section of the current page. The page layout is then complete, and the writers can start to write their articles.
