Displaying fonts

GN4 uses True Type and Open Type fonts or Type I fonts, imported to Microsoft Windows, for the screen display. The displacement of each character on screen is handled by GN4 font metrics data. Fonts must contain all necessary glyphs (see Euro symbol in GN4 fonts).

The display fonts are local for each workstation, thus they have to be installed in Windows, following the standard font installation procedure, or automatically downloaded from the database during Ted4 or Fred4 startup), while the GN4 font metrics is read from the database.

All the fonts used in GN4 must be identical on each workstation. True Type, Open Type and Type I fonts,  after import are kept in database, and the system will install them automatically on the workstations at application startup - automatically re-installing them when a new or modified font is imported in the database.

GN4 does not care if additional fonts, not used and needed by GN4 applications, are installed on workstations.

The screen display fonts must correspond with both printing fonts and GN font metric data.

The character shapes of screen fonts are used by the installed rendering engine to create screen font bitmaps. The size and horizontal and vertical position of each character are driven by the GN4 font metric data.

In order to get the maximum quality of font display, it is recommended to buy the original screen fonts and not to convert them from the printing fonts. The later degrades the hinting information and lowers the quality of font display.
