You may want to set the default horizontal and vertical gap between the selected elements when using the Make default gap feature.

The default value is 0, which means that the element will touch each other.

On the Split subtab of the Extra tab on the Preferences dialog box, in Hor. and Ver., enter a suitable value, e.g. 8pt.
