Basic concepts

The basic concepts of editions and pages are:

Pages are organized in editions.

You create and manage editions on the Editions main tab of Fred4.

You edit pages on the Pages main tab in Fred4.

Pages are stored in the database.

Pages may have up to 16 page layers.

Only one user at a time can edit any of page layers.

You can share layers between pages of the same or other editions.

There is a bidirectional link between text editing and page editing/design and geometry.

There is no duplication of content or geometry, unless you manually copy pages or articles.

When GN4 is integrated with a third-party page make-up applications, pages can be produced in a third-party application as well.

Notes

The Editions and Pages main tabs can be protected by permissions. Typically, only few users are authorized to modify editions.

Creation of pages in a newspaper's environment is usually tied to advertisement needs and to the capabilities of a press machine (a press can print only predefined page combinations, such as 48, 54, 64 and similar pages, but not 49, 51 and other).

Since the pages in GN4 always exist within an edition, the parent edition must be created before you start to create pages. Note: if you want to create 'advance' pages, use a temporary edition.

When an edition or a template is created from scratch in the Fred4, no page is automatically added. But, even if you use edition templates to create a new edition, in which case the edition will already contain pages, sometimes you may want have to add one or more pages.
