You may want to mark certain folders in a specific way.

For example, you may want to mark a set of folders as 'editorial' content containers, while others may be 'wires' content containers, and others yet 'archive' containers, and other as 'contact' containers.

This is achieved by the folderKind attribute on the folder.

Folder kind is an optional setting, but in the standard configuration it is used on the Shell main tab, Pages main tab, Articles main tab, i4 and elsewhere.
