You may want to enable the adding of the subhead over selected body columns, to control where it gets automatically added when clicking the subhead icon on the Article Frames toolbar.

The default value is off.

When off, Fred expects that you select a headline frame to add a subhead frame. When on, Fred allows you to select one or more body columns, and ads a subhead in overlap and runaround.

On the Split subtab of the Extra tab on the Preferences dialog box, tick Treat subhead as intro when adding.
