GN4 features personalized workspace which includes status and position of toolbars and palettes, dimensions and position of the main window and content tabs, and a series of personal preferences regarding display and functionality. Such workspace elements are individual, and potentially different for each user. Workspace preferences are stored on the server, so they follow you on any workstation. Usually, your first task is to set up the personal workspace. Note: in some cases, system administrators may predefine all important preferences on behalf of users.
Personalizing of your workspace in GN4 application includes:
1. | Selecting which toolbars and palettes you want to have displayed and on which positions. |
2. | Defining the size and the positions of the main window, and of one or more document windows. |
3. | Setting up various personal preferences. |
There are two levels of customizing. End-users can change personal preferences if authorized to do so, including which toolbars and palettes to display, but not content of menus, toolbars and shortcut keys.
Changes in menus, toolbars and shortcut keys are carried out only by authorized IT personnel (system administrators, or power users). Miles 33 supplies a standard configuration, which is suitable for power users and typical tasks. IT staff usually modifies the standard configuration, creates and tests various menu, toolbars and shortcut sets, to make them suitable for all required types of users and tasks. For more information about menus, toolbars and shortcuts, see Configuring menus.
|
All users can have the same menus, keyboard shortcuts and toolbars, but on each command in the menu, a restriction can be set (see Permissions and restrictions for more info).
Every user carries out changes in personal preferences. Default preferences may be unsuitable for any specific case. System administrators may predefine some personal preferences for every user.
Please have in mind that this GN4 documentation describes the "standard configuration". Depending on the level of custom changes, your customized configuration may be rather different. Usually, your IT personnel prepares a customized documentation that describes your particular system. Refer to such customized documentation for details.

You can displace at will page editing palettes, and save their status and the position in a named workspace. During text editing, you can also display two text editing palettes, but their status and position cannot be saved in the desktop.
On the first start of Fred4, all palettes are hidden. In the below procedures, decide which palettes you want to have displayed, and on which position. We recommend you to display the Measurement, Rules & Dashes and Area Colors palettes permanently and to enable other palettes when and if you would need them. Moreover, select the measurement system (where applies).
On the Window menu, point to Palettes Sidebar, and then select one or more palettes.
|
Right-click anywhere in a palette, and then select Float (to move the palette from the sidebar to an existing floating palette) or Float New (to move the palette from the sidebar to a new floating object).
|
Note: this procedure requires that you open a page, to create a box and to select it.
1. | Right-click the title bar of ta palette and then select Measures. |
2. | In the Select units dialog box, select what you want for Horizontal and Vertical measures, and then click OK. |
Save the workspace, to make changes permanent.
|
When a user opens Fred4 for the first time, the measurement units for rulers and status bar are set to GN4 global defaults.
In case you need to override the default settings, on the Edit menu, click Preferences, and then select horizontal and vertical units. The selection is stored in your personal preferences, and enabled as soon as you click OK.
Vertical units are used for Y positions, vertical ruler, and height of page objects, vertical margins and page height. Horizontal units are used for X positions, horizontal ruler, and width of page objects, horizontal margins and page width.
Have in mind that what you select here is used only to display values. When entering data, you can always override default units by entering any available unit.
