The site has 47 Ted4 users and 12 Fred4 for a total of 59 seats. The produce anywhere between 20-32 pages during the week and a little bit more on the weekends. Virtual Host environment They are running an HP C7000 chassis with BL460c blades in a Vmware ESX 4.1 environment. The blades have 2 E5649 6 core processors at 2.53 Ghz. The chassis is fiber connected to an EMC AX4-5 SAN that has 2TB of storage. The storage is split between 15k RPM drives setup in a RAID 10 array and 7200 RPM with RAID 5. The 15k drives are used for databases and drives that require faster read times, the 7200RPMs for tark and volume storage. Virtual Servers The GN4 environment is split into the following VMs: •GN4Web – Web Server, 2 x CPU, 8GB RAM, 40GB primary HD for OS, 100GB secondary HD Right now the web server is running around 25% CPU and 50% RAM with approximately 20 users connected at this time. Vmware usage metrics shows about 35-40% utilization. •GN4DB – SQL Server, 2 x CPU, 6GB RAM, 40GB primary HD for OS, 250GB Secondary HD for storage connected to 15K RPM drives through fiber The DB server is hovering around 35% and RAM usage is showing 97% utilization in the task manager but that’s normal behavior for SQL to grab as much RAM as it can. Vmware usage metrics shows about 35-40% utilization.. •GN4Index – Index Server, 2 x CPU, 4GB RAM, 40 GB Primary HD, 100 GB Secondary HD The Index server is barely using any CPU and is at about 35% RAM. •GN4Back4 – Back4, all volumes, scripts, etc. 2 x CPU, 6GB RAM, 60 GB Primary, 500 GB Secondary The Back4 server is running between 60-70 % CPU usage and 50% RAM. Of that, the back4 service itself is utilizing approximately 40% CPU of the entire server and is utilizing 912MB of RAM. This is processing AP stories every 3 minutes but no AP images. The use AP Exchange to pull images to save on bandwidth. Back4 is also monitoring hot folders for image ingestion as well as handling all printing to the RIP and to the archive. Data Size The GN4 database currently is at 2.99 GB and this includes the entire 2011 Tark3/GN4 archive as well as part of 2010. Editions: 70 Pages: 1,954 active pages – 4,664 documents (archive) Articles: 7,535 Stories: 45,197 Images: 12,811 Imgs: 9,309 The volume is using 123GB of space. This will all continue to grow as I continue to migrate tark3 data into gn4. The Exalead size is approximately 500MB. |
Site Tark4 with around 21,000 pages, 105,000 texts and 75,000 images has a database of 6.2 GB and Exalead indexes of 790 MB. Around 85% of the database space is used by the thumbnails and previews of pages and images, that could be stored in disk volumes instead than in the database if needed. The old Tark3 archive with 435,000 pages and 1,256,000 images used 1440 GB of volume disk storage - that should be the same in GN4. The occupation per page is: •325 KB of database; •44 KB of database without thumbnail and previews; •38 KB of Exalead index. •3,500 KB of disk volume. |
In a site, 15 users produce 24 pages per day, connected to a server farm near Milan. In a day they download around 1 GB of data and upload around 160 MB. During peek production they download 216 MB per hours - corresponding to a 0.5 Mbps bandwidth. Note that to scale these numbers for other sites is better to consider the number of pages and not the number of users. Number of pages is a better proxy for activity than just the number of users. |
