Migration of GN3 to GN4 is a complex process that frequently needs manual adjustments. Use GN3Export to export data from a GN3 database in a XML format, suitable to be imported in a GN4 database. Not all data is migrated, for example, personal preferences will need to be recreated, as well as Ted4 and Fred4 desktops (workspaces).
A/ What is migrated automatically (with some adjustments)?
•Titles, media, regions, sections, zones, edition numbers, layer types
•Colors, hyphenation, workstates, categories
•Desks and baskets
•Fonts, font layouts, formats, style libraries
•Object libraries and library objects (since 29/Mar/2013 it exports also the linked pictures)
•Editions, templates, master pages, pages, layers
•Articles, images
•Global preferences
•Users and groups
•Permissions and automatic copy flow paths (in build 1.6.1777 or newer)
B/ What needs to be manually re-created?
•Permissions and automatic copy flow paths (in builds prior to 1.6.1777)
•Wire baskets and generally speaking Image desk configuration and procedures
•Directory styles, sort orders, search dialogs, any custom dialogs, extended queries
•Text estimating
•Personal preferences
•Personal workspaces (GN3 term: desktops)
•Scripts
•Queues, printing and export configurations
•Custom Perl/VB/SQL scripts
C/ What cannot be migrated as such?
•Any solution based on SQL triggers ad stored procedures
•All custom solutions (DLL-based etc)
