You may want to set the default top and bottom runaround to gap images and pull quotes, added to the article layout and vertical gap between the selected elements when adding elements by the Article toolbar.

The default value is 0, which means that the elements will touch other elements.

On the Split subtab of the Extra tab on the Preferences dialog box, in Runaround T/B, enter a suitable value, e.g. 8pt.
