The margins are the distance between margin guides and the page edges.
Page margins are defined on a master level. Every master can have different margins.
You cannot define page margins on a layer level.
On the following screenshot, (1) is the top margin, (2) and (3) and the left and the right margin, and the (4) is the bottom margin.
About asymmetric horizontal margins
Horizontal margins of a page may be symmetric (left and the right margins are the same) or asymmetric (left and the right margins are different).
Sometimes, the odd and even pages have the different inside and outside margins.
It is recommended to avoid the asymmetric page margins, when possible. The reason for this is that switching odd and even masters with asymmetric margins on a made-up page, the page objects WILL NOT MOVE left and right according to the new margins, but will stay where they were.
If it is not possible to avoid asymmetric margins, you can prepare two special scripts, that will allow to users to shift manually all the page object left or right for the predefined amount, when an odd master is replaced by an even master and vice versa.
