A page in Fred4 is vertically divided in columns and gutters.
You can set columns, modules and gutters on the master level, or also on the layer level. By default, they are inherited from the associated master.
Columns
The leftmost column starts on the left page margin. Usually, all the columns on a page have the same width, although you can set different column width for one, more or all the columns, by dragging manually the vertical guides.
The value of the columns width is read from the assigned master page. If you change the columns grid manually, and not through the Layout > Setup, it may lead to wrong readings.
Gutters
Typically, there is a white space between each column. The space is called a gutter. The gutter appears after the first column and between all the columns, but not after the rightmost column.
The sum of widths of all the columns and gutters is equal to the page width, minus the left and right margin.
The value of the gutters width is read from the assigned master page. If you change the gutters width manually, and not through the Layout > Setup, it may lead to wrong readings.
Modules
A page is optionally divided horizontally in modules, or baseline grid.
A page module has a specified height, e.g. 10pt or similar. If the page module height corresponds to the most frequently used leading, it is called baseline grid. The topmost module starts on the top page margin. Usually, all the modules on a page have the same height, although you can set different module height for one, more or all the modules, by dragging manually the horizontal guides.
Typically, there is no white space between each module / baseline grid all the modules follow one each other. This is the recommended setting and suitable for most newspapers. However, you can specify the white space, called module gutter. The gutter appears after the first module and between all the modules, but not after the bottommost module.
The sum of height of all the modules is equal to the page height, minus top and bottom margin.
The value of the modules height is read from the assigned master page. If you change the modules height manually, and not through the Layout > Setup, it may lead to wrong readings.
